Stacey and Ray – Hampton Wedding Photography

Stacey and Ray’s wedding was held at the historic church at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Kim Porter of Makeup by Kim did her usual wonderful job of makeup for the ladies. Reverend Launa Hulse of A Blessing From Above Ceremonies and Services performed the ceremony, helped with the preparations and generally assisted wherever necessary. She was truly a blessing to Stacey and Ray. The couple’s children were a big part of the ceremony, receiving their own rings during the service. The ceremony concluded with the jumping of the broom, always a special event.

The reception was held at Point Plaza Suites in Newport News. Disk Jockey Paul Ricks provided the entertainment. For the second time this year, we had the pleasure of working with Victoria of Victoria Shirley Productions, an outstanding young videographer. Once again the kids had their own special event, tossing a couple of stuffed bears to the other children. It was a great part and Stacey and Ray are a wonderful couple. We wish you a long and happy marriage!

Sarah – Virginia Beach Pageant Photography

In the last year we have had the pleasure of photographing a number of pageant contestants. Some of our clients have won titles, such as Casey Shepard, Shelby Smith, Rosemary Willis and Taylor Burress. Some have also won Most Photogenic awards based on our photography.

Last week, Sarah came in for a studio session. She is entering the Miss Virginia Teen USA pageant in October. She is also an aspiring model needing photos for her comp cards and portfolio to submit to modeling agencies. We enlisted the help of one of our favorite hair and makeup artists, Caranie Sigmon Smith to help us make Sarah look amazing for her photo session. We will be doing a beach session later this month to help round out her portfolio. Good luck Sarah!

Joe and Jessica’s Beach Wedding – Virginia Beach Wedding Photography

Before Joe and Jessica had their “Trash the Dress” session, they had their wedding on the same beach. For a change, the day was warm, not extremely hot like so many of our outdoor weddings this summer. The couple had rented a cottage at the beach on 89th Street in Virginia Beach. They had a short walk on the boardwalk down to the oceanfront which was still populated with families enjoying a day on the beach. Having known Jessica’s family for about 30 years and remembering her as a baby, it was real honor and pleasure to be able to photograph her wedding. We left the beach for their reception at the Waterman’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach.

The Boxwood Inn, Newport News – Favorite Wedding Venues

Boxwood Inn

The Hampton Roads area is well known for its history dating back to the founding of our country. It’s always exciting to photograph an event at one of our historical locations. One of our favorites is the Boxwood Inn in Newport News.
In 1896, the area was known as Warwick County. This area was the end of the line for the railroad from Richmond. Simon Curtis was a young man of a prominent local family. He overheard some dignitaries stating that Warwick County was up and coming and location was needed for a hall of records. Simon said, “I’m your man”. Simon built the house, hall of records, post office and general store, all in one. He became known as the “boss man” of Warwick County.

Simon’s wife was a local socialite who frequently entertained in the home. In fact, their home became known as a House of Celebrities. Their son Coleman founded Curtis Motors, the first Ford dealership in the area. Their other son founded Curtis Oil.

During World War I and II, the military leased the house for R & R for their officers. Black Jack Pershing slept at the house.

Coleman stayed at the home after his parents died. He met and married his wife Edith, whose family collected antiques. She filled the house with her collection. After Coleman and Edith passed, the house was locked and sat empty for ten years.

In the 1980′s, Burger King wanted to purchase the property, tear down the house and construct a restaurant. Barbara Lucas purchased the property with the idea of converting it to a bed and breakfast. After sitting empty for so long, a considerable amount of repair was needed. There were also a lot of back taxes due. Fortunately, the house was still full of antiques. An auction was held which brought in four million dollars.

In 2007, Barbara was ready to retire. After repeated requests and arm-twisting, Barbara convinced Kathy Hulick to purchase the property. She wanted someone who would run the inn with the same care and love that she had for it. Kathy had an established catering business and was well known and respected for the quality of her services. Kathy took over on December 1st, 2008. Since then, the house has received state historic status in July 2009 and federal historic status in September 2009. Because of that, the house can never be destroyed.

As a venue for weddings and events, the Boxwood Inn is known for personal service. Kathy’s philosophy is that when you walk in with a vision, she will do whatever it takes to meet that vision. She starts with a blank page, no cookie cutter menus. Her son Josh is the executive chef. You have use of anything she has on hand for your event. When I interviewed Kathy, the one thing that came across was her passion for creating a special day for her customers. I last photographed at the Boxwood Inn this past June. I have never heard more glowing reports from the bride and her Mother when that talked about Kathy and her staff. Kathy has dedicated her service at the Boxwood Inn to her son Chad. Chad passed away on Father’s Day 2008 with a heart attack. He was only 22 years old. Everything is done in his memory.

Romantic “Trash the Dress” Portraits – Virginia Beach Wedding Photography

Joe and Jessica were married on Saturday. On Monday they wanted to do an after the wedding session that involved what has become known as “Trash the Dress”. We met at the same beach where they had their wedding ceremony. While I don’t care for the name Trash the Dress, what proceeded was one of the most romantic and sensual portrait sessions we have ever done. We are incredibly grateful to Joe and Jessica for this opportunity.

Hampton Roads Wedding Guide – Favorite Wedding Vendors

Hampton Roads Wedding Guide Cover

While not technically a wedding vendor, the Hampton Roads Wedding Guide is an indispensable resource for brides planning their wedding. I recently interviewed Marcia Jordan, publisher of the Wedding Guide.

Marcia Jordan

Tell us about the Hampton Roads Wedding Guide. What is it’s purpose?

The Hampton Roads Wedding Guide is a complete planning guide and service directory designed to help engaged couples and their families plan the wedding. There are timetables and checklists as well as valuable information about wedding planning. And, best of all, it features local wedding professionals.

How long have you been involved with it? How long has the Hampton Roads Wedding Guide been published? How often is it published?

I am the original owner of the GUIDE. The first edition was in 1988. I publish twice a year – January and July so I am working on issue 44, January 2011.

Where is the Hampton Roads Wedding Guide distributed? How much does it cost?

The GUIDE is distributed through bridal shops, Macy’s, Dillard’s and Belk bridal registries, banquet facilities, many advertisers, and bridal shows. It is a FREE publication. Brides can visit us online for locations and upcoming bridal shows.

So many brides use the internet for their wedding planning, how does the Hampton Roads Wedding Guide help the bride with their planning? Do you have a website?

www.hrweddingguide.com features all of our advertisers and most of them have links to their website making our site a one-stop-shop when you’re surfing the net for wedding services and products. We also have a user friendly budget calculator. Bridal shows, trunk shows, and open houses are also featured on our website.

What do you see as the main benefits of having a printed publication to hand out to brides as opposed to online information?

The GUIDE offers easily referenced articles on wedding related subjects that the bride might not have ever thought about. We offer loads of tips from selecting your wedding vendors to decorating your wedding. Best of all, the vendors ads themselves lets the bride know who specializes in weddings. Our Reception & Rehearsal Dinner Site Directory is very popular with brides because at a glance they can know the capacity of a venue, if outside catering is allowed, if the facility has a view, etc. A person could spend an awful lot of time surfing the net for all this information that is found in the GUIDE. In fact, many years ago the Wedding Guide was coined “the wedding bible” by many brides and vendors.

Do you have any suggestions or tips for brides as they plan their event? How about grooms?

Share responsibilities: Don’t assume you have to do everything yourself. This idea is old-fashioned, as well as exhausting. Weddings are meant to be joyous celebrations but too often they turn into the quest for perfection. It is impossible to have the “perfect wedding”. By realizing that your wedding day is one big party that should be fun, you can let go of some obsessions; ribbons that don’t match your attendants’ dresses; the last minute substitution by your florist because lily of the valley was unavailable.

In your opinion, what has changed the most and what has changed the least in the wedding industry since you’ve been publishing the Guide?

The days of the groom being responsible for the rehearsal dinner and showing up on time for the wedding are long gone. With today’s believe that marriage is an equal partnership, the groom is involved in almost every aspect of wedding planning. The groom is also becoming more involved in the financial aspects of the wedding. With many couples marrying at an older age, many are paying for their own wedding or contribute to the parents’ wedding expenses.

As men become more involved, we are seeing traditional wedding duties change. Beginning with the engagement announcement, more and more newspapers feature photographs of the couple instead of the traditional bride-to-be. Many newlyweds today both work full-time and share housekeeping duties. Because of this the groom is being included in many bridal showers. Theme showers which include interests of both the bride and groom have become very popular. The ever changing roles of men and women are indeed having an effect on the traditional wedding.

Thanks Marcia for providing such a wonderful resource for wedding planning and thanks for featuring one of our images on the cover of your current issue!
